WAMPIS INDIGENOUS LEADERS VISIT TO SCOTLAND

Between 25 - 30 June 2025, two Wampis leaders are coming to Scotland. They hope to build connections with communities and groups engaged in the struggle for community land rights, for autonomous self-government and for sustainable community economies. For nearly a decade, the Wampis have been self-governing their territory in northern Peru, covering over 1.3 million hectares (more than 13,000 square kilometres). The Wampis are heavily impacted by illegal gold mining and logging (including for balsa wood to construct wind turbines) and oil and gas concessions. As part of their goal of reaching *tarimat pujut*, or good living in harmony with nature, the Wampis are also engaged in autonomous initiatives around health, education, justice, communications, transport and livelihoods.

The visit of the leaders from the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampis Nation (GTANW - nacionwampis.com) is supported by Forest Peoples Programme (FPP - forestpeoples.org) and Grassroots to Global

‘THE CHARIOT, THE FLAG, AND THE EMPTY EMPTY HOUSES’

This extract of the play is performed by Daniel Cullen and Rhona Coogan from Skye. It is a play with music written by Daniel Cullen, built after workshops and conversations had with people on the Isle of Skye. The atmosphere at the play is one of fun and engagement, there are lots of upbeat comedy songs and scenes, but the substance behind the work is strong - with themes addressing some of the problems those who are from and live on Skye face on a daily basis, including housing, transport, language, over-tourism, eradication of identity.
